Michael Thurmond's 6-Week Body Makeover Review

Review In a Nutshell

Michael Thurmond's 6-week "makeover" program involves managing caloric intake, and doing both cardiovascular and weight training exercise with the help of a personal trainer. The goal is to achieve fast weight loss that is maintainable long-term. To participate in the makeover version of the program, you will have to be located in Southern California or in San Francisco in order to have access to the fitness facilities.

How Does It Work?

Before starting either the 6-week Body Makeover or Nutrition Only programs, you will fill out a "nutritional analysis" detailing your weight, eating and exercise habits/lifestyle, health issues, food cravings, and family health history. Based on this profile and the photographs you are encouraged to bring or send, a personalized "blueprint" is created for the six to twelve weeks of your program. Eating plans include five to seven meals per day "designed to stimulate your metabolism."

While on the program you send in weekly logs of your food intake and weight loss, and the plan may be adjusted based on this information. The makeover plan includes twenty four one-hour sessions with a personal trainer, who will help you through the weight training/body sculpting portion of your exercise program; you meet with your trainer up to four times per week.

You are expected to do an hour of cardiovascular exercise six times per week on your own, whether you're doing the makeover program or the nutrition-only program. (The latter doesn't include a body sculpting component).

Who Is It Good For?

If you can afford the fee, live in California near a Michael Thurmond fitness facility, and are prepared to undergo a fairly intense exercise and nutritional program, you may achieve good results with the 6-week "makeover." The program is personalized to address any health concerns you have and/or medications you're taking, so it would be suitable for those who want a rigorous program that is still medically safe.

For those who don't want to cook the meals suggested in the program (and who can afford it), an in-home chef catering service is available. Minimum food order is $250, plus delivery charge.

Pros

  • The 6-week program is fitness intensive and catered to your particular body shape, targeting specific problem areas.
  • The makeover program includes a twelve-week membership to fitness facility.
  • If you have medical issues, the staff at the facility work in conjunction with your doctor.
  • Nutrition plans are personalized to your overall health, body type, weight loss objectives/progress and your food preferences.
  • Maintenance instructions are provided when the program is over.

Cons

  • The cost is high: $1,400 - $1,500 for the 6-week makeover; $500 for the nutrition-only plan; $5,500 per week for the in-spa program.
  • The idea of lifestyle changes as "makeover" may not be conducive to long-term success.
  • Similar beneficial results might be gained from consulting your doctor or nutritionist.
  • The programs are very exercise-intensive, which may be intimidating if you haven't exercised before.

Further Thoughts

If you're mainly concerned with changing your eating, exercise and lifestyle habits rather than just dieting, this program may be a good jump-start for those who can afford it, but if you don't need to lose weight quickly for medical reasons, you may want to consider more gradual habit changes.
