Weight Watchers™ Meeting Review
Review In a Nutshell
Weight Watchers meetings can be found in almost every locality in the US. Group support provides one of the strongest features of the program and sets Weight Watchers apart from many other weight loss regimes. Despite progress with online features, meetings are still to be considered the core of the Weight Watchers™ experience.
How Does It Work?
Guests can sit in on a Weight Watchers meeting without an appointment. To join, a registration and 1st week fee is required, followed by weekly payments. Team leaders provide direction and guidance. Weight Watchers meetings also entail a private weigh-in, which can be intimidating to some. Topics vary at meetings, and include nutrition, physical activity and positive reinforcement of individual progress.
Based on a patented formula, the points system measures intake without really laying down the law on the quality of intake (i.e. setting "off limit foods"). A Weight Watchers Point™ stems from a formula that involves the relationship of calories, fat grams and dietary fiber grams.
Who Is It Good For?
Dieters desiring or requiring consistent oversight of their progress, group support and in-person accountability.
Pros
- Team leadership
- Positive atmosphere
- Point system has merits and long track record
- Accountability paired with loss of feeling of having to "go it alone"
Cons
- Costs, while not prohibitive, are substantial
- Points system does not necessarily distinguish healthy meals from unhealthy ones
